Having an external curator select the artistic content of PrøveRommet at Knipsu was first attempted during the autumn season of 2012. It was well visited and well received, and proved a valuable experience for those involved.

I am delighted that Benedicte Clementsen took on the challenge of curating it this time, and would like to thank her and all the artists involved for bringing their energy and abilities into this one night exhibition.

Apichaya Wanthiang

"What kind of thoughts could grow in these waterless deserts?"

Mixed Media

He said : ‘I cannot but confess that it is strange what you said ?’

What did I say then ?

‘About the water turning brown, just like that…?’

Humm, I’m sure you must have misunderstood. There is no water anywhere near here.

Eric Alvin Wangel

Video

Unable to act, unable to move. The world created in my image.

Something happened.

The parallel stuck. The dream is reality now.

Moments before the plane crashes and your body dies, a wave of calmness washes over you.

Clara Morell

"Circular time will save us from the apocalypse"

Video

Lose the feeling of Time and you will create unique bonds with Space. Have faith in the Loop.

Helene Norseth

"A place- seen from above and the way home"

Installation

On the map, I have marked a black area just outside the center. I am thinking of going there some day, past the great range of mountains and the border to the other land that you can seek if you find the other piece of the map. When I get there I will put up my telescope so that I can see the mountains, the steppes, the border, the other land and what moves across the landscapes in closer eyesight.

Håkon Holm-Olsen

"Fristaten Mars"

Sculpture

As the white spots on the map became smaller and smaller, more and more people started looking for new maps.

The colonization of the solar system seemed like an endless series of opportunities, an enormous space for trial and failure.

And, possibly; a chance to start from scratch and do things right.

"time units remaining before an event occurs or a deadline expires"

Sound installation

Utopia is located at 29°36′59″N 99°31′36″W

If we are wrong, justice is a lie, love has no meaning.

Kristin Austreid

"Nærmere fra deg #1 and #2"

Oil on MDF

Kunne jeg forsvinne i deg, ligge i dine tanker. Om jeg finner en som er meg lik.

Du er bare synet av deg, bare orda du deler, og jeg er fast i meg.

---

Jennifer Johansson

"Limited and Glorified, Nature as an Object"

Sculpture/video/performance

We all swim in the wake of culture. Can we ever distinguish what is "neutral" nature?- In the secularized society, science determines what is natural. In other societies, religion does. What they have in common though, is that the man decides what is natural. - Are you suggesting that nature does not exist beyond our perception of it?- This, my friend, remains to be seen...

Hilde Skevik

Performance

One man sat on a bench in the park.

Along came an other and sat down beside him even though there was empty benches around.

Two men sat on a bench in a park and sad nothing to each other for a long time.

Then one of them got up, said good day to the other and walked away.

Retold as I remember it, from the short story "En plutserlig frigjørende tanke" by Kjell Askildsen.

Ida Grimsgaard

"Kalos eidos"

Performance

"But Lots wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt. (Gen.19:26)."

Ida Grimsgaard got her B.A. in scenography at Norwegian Theatre Academy in Fredrikstad, Norway. She's exploring the coincidences that appear by being present. Searching for the unsure, to meet something unexpected. The body and its physicality is the starting point of her work

Fredrik Berberg

"The Map and the Terrain"

Sculpture

How do you make an informal description on a place that does not exist? On the book cover of “Utopia” written by Thomas More, there is a map of the actual island of Utopia. It sounds a bit strange; imagine if someone claims to hold the map of heaven, you would be skeptical. But it’s true, because Thomas More invented the entire idea about this place. Just like my carpet that shows a map of The Garden of Eden.

Øyvind Hegg-Lunde

"Improvisation no 8"

Music

Drummer from Borgund, Sogn. Must not be confused with Øyvind-dark.

Jacob Lysgaard

Design

Benedicte Clementsen

"Cooccur"

Curator

“I shall speak of how melancholy and utopia preclude one another. How they fertilize one another... of the revulsion that follows one insight and precedes the next... of superabundance and surfeit. Of stasis in progress. And of myself, for whom melancholy and utopia are heads and tails of the same coin.”

Gunter Grass

Thanks to PrøveRommet, Knipsu and all the artists for great support and trust in making this one night exhibition.
